BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana assistant coach Ben McDonald has resigned to pursue other opportunities, IU Head Coach Mike Davis announced today."Ben has made some key contributions to the Indiana program over the last three seasons," Davis said. "We appreciate his efforts and wish him the best in the future."
McDonald, an eight-year professional basketball veteran, including three NBA seasons, worked with the Indiana big men and coordinated individual workout plans for each of the Hoosiers. He joined the Indiana staff after serving as a member of the NIKE All-America Basketball Camp staff.
He is one of the University of California-Irvine's all-time leading scorers. He played 114 consecutive games at UC-Irvine and was elected to the school's hall of fame.
Following his playing days with the Anteaters, he was the 50th pick in the 1984 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He joined the Cavaliers in 1986 after playing in Spain from 1984-1985.
He spent time in the NBA with Cleveland (1986) and Golden State (1986-89) and played overseas in Israel (1988) and Germany (1992-94). McDonald also had tenures with Albany (1990-91), San Jose (1991) and Oklahoma City (1992) in the Continental Basketball Association.
McDonald received a bachelor's degree in social science from California-Irvine.
He served as an assistant basketball coach at California State-Dominguez Hills in 1996-97.
Most recently McDonald has served as a teacher in the Long Beach Unified School District in Long Beach, Calif. He has held such a position since 1996 and while teaching, he has also served as a shooting instructor at the Nike All-America Basketball Camp.
