Peterson Named All-American

Bloomington, Ind. -- For the second consecutive year, Indiana junior Krista Peterson has been named an honorable mention Division I All-American by the American Water Polo Coaches Association. Peterson was also an honorable mention choice last season.
"I think this is a reflection of the year Krista had and the solid leader she was for us in the pool," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "She showed up and played very well in the big games for us. This is an indication of the steady progress Krista has made as a leader."
The AWPCA All-American list contains three teams and an honorable mention list for Division I, II and III. USC's Moriah Van Norman was selected the Peter J. Cutino Award winner as the Division I Player of the Year. Only eight players from east coast schools were selected as All-Americans on any level.
Peterson turned in a stellar 2004 campaign. With the graduation of three-time All-American Kristin Stanford, much was expected of Peterson on the offensive end of the pool, and she delivered. The Portland, Ore., native averaged over two goals a game and led the team with 60 scores on the season. She also led the team with nine hat tricks and 31 assists. With her 60-goal, 30-assist season, Peterson became the first Hoosier to score 50 or more goals and assist on 30 or more in a season.
"I am really surprised and excited to be selected as an All-American," Peterson said. "I really think that more than anything it is a reflection of our team and how well we did this season. I could not have earned this honor without my teammates."
Peterson has started all 29 matches this season. Against George Washington on Feb. 29, Peterson netted her third five-plus goal game of her career scoring five in the victory over the Colonials. She also ranked second on the team in kickouts earned with 36 and four-meter penalty shot goals with four. Peterson was named first-team CWPA All-Western Division. She was also a first-team All-Division in 2003 when the Hoosiers were in the Southern Division of the CWPA.
At the Eastern Championships, Peterson scored five goals in three games, including a pair of two-goal games against Hartwick and Brown. She also had six assists with four coming in the opener against George Washington. For her efforts, Peterson was named first-team All-Championships for the second-straight season.
Peterson was one of only nine girls outside the state of California to make any All-America team in 2003. She was also the CWPA Eastern Championship MVP, scoring nine goals and leading the Hoosiers to the NCAA Final Four. She became the first Eastern player to earn first-team All-NCAA Championships.
