BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The awards continue to roll in for Indiana shortstop Seth Bynum. Following an exceptional 2004 season, Bynum was recently named the District V Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). He was also a second team All-Mideast Regional Team shortstop as well.
Bynum was one of nine players to be named a District Player of the Year. District V is broken down geographically into Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The other District Players of the Year were Ed Lucas of Dartmouth (District I), Craig Badger of Rutgers (District II), Stephen Head of Mississippi (District III), Ryan Jones of East Carolina (District IV), Alex Gordon of Nebraska (District VI), J.P. Howell of Texas (District VII), Eric Nielsen of UNLV (District VIII) and Jered Weaver of Long Beach State (District IX).
"Seth had an outstanding year for us," Indiana head coach Bob Morgan said. "He led our team in most offensive categories and was one of the best in the Big Ten. He really made a big jump offensively between his junior and senior seasons. I feel that if our team had a better year, he would have been the Big Ten Player of Year. We have had a long line of outstanding shortstops here at Indiana, and Seth has joined that elite group."
The Louisville, Ky., native was the only shortstop selected as a District Player of the Year. His name has also been on all three ballots in voting for the NCBWA All-America team, which will be made public next week.
Bynum joined nine other Big Ten players on the American Baseball Coaches Association Mideast Regional team. He was a second-team selection at shortstop. The first-team shortstop was Brian Bixler from Eastern Michigan. Bixler was a second round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the MLB First Year Player Draft.
Bynum finished the 2004 season ranked among the top five in the country at his position in batting average. He hit .387 for the year with 79 hits, 10 home runs and 65 runs batted in.
Bynum ranked in the top 10 among Big Ten players in nearly every offensive category this season on his way to earning first-team honors at shortstop. A starter in all 109 games he played in over two seasons at Indiana, Bynum was recognized by Baseball America as a Midseason All-American in April. Bynum spent two seasons playing at Lincoln Trail Junior College prior to coming to IU.
Back on May 27, Bynum signed with the Montreal Expos. The Expos drafted Bynum in the 38th round of the 2003 MLB First Year Player Draft. He is currently playing for the Expos' Class A affiliate the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League. Bynum has started a pair of games, while batting .286. He has only been with the team less than a week.
