Dennison Earns Academic All-American Honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second consecutive year, senior golfer Karen Dennison was named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American Women's At-Large First Team in the University Division. The sports marketing and management major earned Academic All-District V honor in May before being selected to the Academic All-America squad.
Dennison was one of 16 players to be selected to the first team and the only athlete from Division V. She was also the only Big Ten athlete chosen for the first-team Women's At-Large Team and one of three golfers. In addition, Dennison was one of eight repeat first team selections.
The Women's At-Large program for the Academic All-America program includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
After being named first team Academic All-District, Dennison's name was put on a national ballot and sent out to members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The members vote for athletes they feel are deserving of the honor. To be nominated as an Academic All-District and start the process towards Academic All-American, a student athlete must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
Dennison earned first-team honors in 2003 as well. She is a two-time first-team All-Big Ten player. In 2003-04, Dennison won two individual titles at the Shootout at the Legends and the Indiana Invitational, and helped team win the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout. The Madison, Ind., native was honored as a first-team All-American in 2003 by the National Golf Coaches' Association.
