6/22/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Water Polo
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The Indiana water polo team was recognized for its success in the classroom by the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA). Seven Hoosiers earned AWPCA All-Academic Team honors. The Hoosiers' team grade point average (GPA) was one of only 10 schools higher than 3.25.
"It has always been our goal as a program to produce the finest student-athletes that we can and academic performance has always been important to us," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "Our team's performance in the classroom is just another statement as to how we hold that as a priority, and we are very proud of that accomplishment."
The seven honorees for the Hoosiers ties the school record set in 2001. Over the last four seasons, the Hoosiers have had a total of 22 Academic All-Americans. Senior Melissa Pietras also became the first Hoosier to earn Academic All-America honors throughout her four-year career.
The AWPCA All-Academic team for individual athlete honors is divided into three different categories. The three levels are Excellent (3.2-3.4 GPA), Superior (3.41-3.7) and Outstanding (3.71-4.0). The qualification for CWPA All-Academic standing is that a player must be a starter or major contributor, while also maintaining a 3.2 or higher GPA.
Freshman Kristin Zernicke became the second Hoosier to earn the Outstanding grade on the AWPCA All-Academic team. Molly Fonner was the first Hoosier to be named to the Outstanding All-Academic team in 2002.
Junior Kandace Waldthaler and sophomore Janis Pardy were both named to the Superior team with GPAs between 3.41 and 3.7.
Juniors Jessica Goldner and Krista Peterson, senior Melissa Pietras and sophomore Emily Schmitt all were named to the Excellent All-Academic team. Goldner, Peterson and Schmitt each earned their second honors. Goldner and Peterson were named in 2002, while Schmitt was honored as a freshman last season.
Pietras' All-Academic team honor was the fourth time in her career. She was named to the Excellent team for the third time. Pietras was on the Superior team last season.
The Hoosiers' team GPA was among the 10 best in the country. The Hoosiers' had the highest team GPA of any team ranked in the top 20 at the end of the season. The Hoosiers finished the 2004 season ranked 13th in the country. Indiana was also the fourth ranked Collegiate Water Polo Association team. A school's team GPA must be above 2.75 to earn AWPCA Team Honors.
