Overton and Peters Named to All-Region Team

Norman, Okla. -- Indiana golfers Jeff Overton and Heath Peters were named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
"It's nice for these two outstanding players to be recognized on the All-Region team," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "They are in a very select group of athletes from this area of the country, and it's a nice, well-deserved honor for both these players."
Each of the nine PING All-Region teams are comprised of 15 golfers. Of the 135 All-Region selections, 61 were members of the All-Region team last season. Overton earned All-Region honors for the second time, and Peters picked up his first honor. Members of the PING All-Region teams are eligible for PING All-America honors.
Overton accomplished several remarkable feats during the 2003-04 season. The junior completed the season finishing tied for 20th at the NCAA Championships. He was named Big Ten Player of the Year averaging 70.62, the lowest season-stroke average in the program's history. Overton's 72.25 career stroke average also stands as the lowest in IU history.
The Evansville, Ind., product captured five individual titles and received the Les Bolstad Award for the lowest stroke average in the Big Ten Conference. He was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week five times and was selected to the U.S. team at the 2004 Fuji Xerox U.S.A. Collegiate Golf Championship. The team will compete in Japan on July 13-16.
Overton set the top two 18-hole (64, 65), top three 36-hole (130, 131, 134) and top two 54-hole (199, 203) scoring records in Indiana history.
Peters, a second team All-Big Ten selection, narrowly missed joining Overton at the NCAA Championships. The junior fired a three-day 223 total (74-70-83) and tied for 30th at the NCAA Central Regionals.
In addition to being honored by the Big Ten, Peters concluded the season with a 73.00 scoring average, the eighth lowest in IU's history. His 73.92 career scoring average is third in IU's history behind Overton and former two-time All-American Randy Leen (73.65).
Additionally, Peters recorded six top 10 finishes on the season, including ties for third place at the Steve Kerr Invitational and the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate.
The duo led an Indiana team that finished the 2003-04 campaign with four titles, the second-most in the program's history and the most since the 1974-75 season. The Hoosiers also carded the lowest stroke average in school history at 291.84 while returning to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 1996-97 season and the first time in Mayer's six-year tenure.
