Richmond Advances To Finals At Olympic Trials

Ola Sesay is seeded first heading into the finals with a semifinal jump of 6.63m (21-09), while 2000 Olympic Bronze medalist Marion Jones is fifth overall with a mark of 6.39m (20-11.75).
Richmond, a two-time All-American, was the 2001 and 2003 Big Ten Outdoor long jump champion. She earned All-America accolades for performances in both the long jump and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team.
The top three finishers in long jump, who have met the Olympic "A" qualifying standard in their respective events, will be named to the U.S. Olympic roster. The standard for the women’s long jump is 6.70m (21-11.75).
Besides Richmond, another pair of recent Indiana graduates competed on Monday evening. Tom Chorny (1999) and Tomas Brooks (2001) finished 21st and 22nd respectively in the semifinals of the 3000-meter steeplechase. Chorny ran a time of 8:47.30, while Brooks finished in 8:49.90.
No Olympic Trial competitions will be held on Tuesday, July 12th or Wednesday, July 13th. The trials will resume on Thursday, July 14th with a current and former IU athlete in action. Rising senior Aarik Wilson will compete in the qualifying round of the triple jump at 3:45 p.m., and Richmond is slated to compete in the women’s long jump final at 5:45 p.m.
Current Hoosier David Neville, who competed in the 400-meters this past Sunday, will return to the track on Friday, July 14th at 6 p.m., in the qualifying round of the 200-meters.
