Carruthers, a 2003 IU graduate, came into the trials ranked fourth in the nation, having posted a time of 12.56 back on June 19. Carruthers eventually made it to the finals in this event after finishing 12th in the quarterfinals (13.33) and eighth in the semifinals (12.92).
The Paducah, Ky., product earned All-American status on 10 different occasions: four times as part of the 4x100-meter relay team that marked the first time IU won the Big Ten title in the same event for four straight seasons, three times in the 100-meter hurdles, twice in the 60-meter hurdles, and once in the 60-meter dash during the course of her Hoosier career. She also holds IU school records in the 60-meter hurdles (7.92) and the 100-meter hurdles (12.68).
Indiana had a total of 13 current and former athletes compete at the 2004 Olympic Trials. Carruthers, former teammate Rose Richmond, both 2003 graduates and DeDee Nathan, a 1990 alum, all posted top-five finishes in their respective events. Richmond placed fourth in the women’s long jump finals with a leap of 6.56m/21-6.25. Nathan finished fifth overall in the heptathlon with 6,020 points.
