Ricmond’s leap of 6.76m/22-2.25 qualifies her for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. However, due to the trials finish and Olympic standard guidelines, Richmond will not know her official Olympic status until Aug. 8.
Marion Jones (7.11m/23-4) and Grace Upshaw (6.77m/22-2.50) earned automatic spots on the U.S. team by finishing first and second at the July 15 Olympic Trials. Akiba McKinney (6.57m/21-6.75) and Richmond finished third and fourth, respectively. Neither McKinney nor Richmond met the Olympic standard at the trials but since Richmond met the standard last week, she could go to Athens, Greece as a member of the team. Since McKinney finished higher than Richmond at the trials, McKinney earns the spot if she meets the standard by Aug. 8.
McKinney has four more meets to meet this standard. The Olympic Candidate Qualifer Meet will be held on July 28, 31 and August 4, 8 in Chula Vista, Calif.
