Dennison Into Round of 32 (8/11/04)

ERIE, Pa. - 2004 Indiana graduate Karen Dennison advanced to the round of 32 during match play at the 104th United States Women's Amateur Golf Tournament at the Kahkwa Club. The former IU standout defeated Venezuelan Maru Martinez 2 and 1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Dennison was 1-up after the par-4 first hole when Martinez opened up play with a bogey. After a birdie on the par-4 second, the former Hoosier was 2-up. She gave a stroke back with a bogey on the par-3 third hole.
Both players were even par on the fourth hole, but a bogey by Martinez on the par-4 fifth and a birdie by Dennison on the sixth hole pushed her advantage to 3-up. Martinez earned a stroke back with a Dennison bogey on the par-4 seventh.
Dennison would increase her lead to 3-up twice over the next four holes, putting the twosome on the par-4 13th. After back-to-back birdies on the par-4 13th and par-5 14th, Martinez cut Dennison's margin to 1-up.
Both player's fired the same totals on the par-3 15th and par-4 16th, but a Martinez bogey on the par-4 17th clinched the match for Dennison.
The Madison, Ind., native will play Irene Cho of Los Angles, Calif., on Thursday morning at 7:46. Cho won her first round match in 19 holes over Elizabeth Janangelo, Golfweek's Player of the Year.
Dennison was named to the 2004 Verizon/CoSIDA University Division Women's At-Large Academic All-District V and All-American teams. She won two individual titles during the 2003-04 campaign at the Shootout at the Legends and the Indiana Invitational, and helped the team win the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout.
Dennison was also a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection who earned a sponsor's exemption to compete in the 2003 Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. She finished with a 153 (75-78), missing the cut by eight strokes.
