Two Named to Sports Medicine Staff

Bloomington, Ind. -Indiana graduate and veteran National Football League trainer Dean Kleinschmidt will head the Hoosiers' football sports medicine efforts, IU Athletics Director Terry Clapacs and Head Coach Gerry DiNardo announced today. In addition, Brian Lund will serve as the assistant football trainer.
Kleinschmidt arrives in Bloomington after spending the last two years as the Washington Redskins' head trainer. Prior to that, Kleinschmidt spent 31 years as an assistant and head trainer for the New Orleans Saints. He also served as the administrative director at East Jefferson General Hospital Wellness Center in Metairie, La., from 2001-02.
A 1970 Indiana graduate with a bachelor's degree in health and safety and a major in athletic training, Kleinschmidt has been inducted into the following Halls of Fame - New Orleans Saints (2002), National Athletic Trainers Association (1994) and Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association (1990). The 2003 National College Football Foundation Athletic Trainer of the Year has received distinguished awards from Indiana University and the U.S. Sports Academy, and he directed a Saints' training department that was named 1986 NFL Athletic Training Staff of the Year.
Kleinschmidt has coordinated all sports medicine efforts at the Senior Bowl All-Star Game in Mobile, Ala., since 1971, and he has served on the board of directors and as president of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society. His son, Rhett, is a junior wide receiver for the Hoosiers.
This is Lund's second tenure in Bloomington, as he earned his master's degree in kinesiology from Indiana in 1999. Following graduation, he served as the assistant trainer (1999-2000) and the head trainer (2000-04) at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. Lund oversaw the sports medicine efforts for Buena Vista's 21-sport program.
Lund received his bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science from Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1998. During his undergraduate career, he was an athletic training intern for the New Orleans Saints, which included assisting with medical record-keeping at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. He then spent one year as the athletic trainer at Brown County High School.
