Overton in Contention at U.S. Amateur

Mamaroneck, N.Y. - Continuing his successful summer, Indiana men's golfer Jeff Overton grinded to a 3-over-par 73 in the opening round at the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club. The senior battled through a steady downpour, which eventually suspended the completion of the first round into Tuesday morning, to finish in a tie for 21st place in the 312-player field.
Winged Foot, the host of the 2006 U.S. Open, has an East and West Course. Overton maneuvered through the difficult East Course, which is set up as a 6,775-yard, par 70.
Beginning on the back nine, Overton carded a 3-over through the first nine with bogeys at No.'s 11, 16 and 17. However, the Evansville, Ind., native settled down and concluded his round with 10 straight pars.
Only two players were able to break par, including the leader Oscar Alvarez (-3), and defending NCAA Champion and UNLV standout Ryan Moore (-1).
Tuesday is the final round of stroke play. The field will be trimmed down to 64 following the second round, and the golfers will compete in a match play tournament to determine the 2004 U.S. Amateur Champion.
Overton is scheduled to tee off at 12:43 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday.
