Overton Moves on to Match Play at U.S. Amateur

Mamaroneck, N.Y. - Despite a double bogey on the first hole, Indiana men's golfer Jeff Overton advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club. The senior carded his second consecutive 3-over-par 73 for a two-round 146 total, good for a tie for 17th in the 312-player field.
The top 64 players qualified for match play, which begins Wednesday. Overton will face Jonathan Pauli, a junior at Oakland Univeristy, in the opening round at 9 a.m. (EDT).
After playing the East Course on Monday, Overton took a shot at the long, difficult 7,266-yard West Course. Following the opening hole, Overton reeled off birdies at the par-3 third, par-5 fifth and par-4 sixth holes to get to 1-under on the day.
However, the Evansville, Ind., native closed the frontside with three straight bogeys, heading out with a 2-over 37.
The second team All-American bounced back, recording five pars to start the back nine. Overton offset a bogey at No. 15 with a birdie at the par-4 16th, but he closed out his round with a bogey on No. 18.
Winged Foot showed why it will host the 2006 U.S. Open as only one player was able to shoot under par. Defending NCAA Champion Ryan Moore of UNLV captured medalist honors, firing a two-round, 1-under-par 139. The senior defeated runners-up Nick Cook and Oscar Alvarez, who finished at even par.
