Mamaroneck, N.Y. - After finishing tied for 17th in two rounds of stroke play, Indiana men's golfer Jeff Overton dominated Jonathan Pauli in the opening round of match play at the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club. Overton defeated Pauli, a junior at Oakland University, 6 and 5, to advance to the round of 32.
The senior opened strong, recording three pars on the first three holes en route to winning the first and third holes to take a 2-up lead. Both players birdied the par-5 fifth hole before Overton won the next three holes to build an insurmountable 5-up lead.
Overton birdied the par-4 sixth and eight holes while carding a par at the par-3 seventh to take command of the match. Pauli went par, bogey, bogey during the three-hole stretch.
The competitors halved the next four holes when the Evansville, Ind., native netted a birdie at the par-3 13th hole. Overton's birdie coupled with Pauli's par closed out the match.
In the 13 holes, Overton garnered four birdies and shot 1-under-par.
