Strickland Pours in 14 Points

Casalpusterlengo, Italy - Indiana junior Marshall Strickland scored a team-high 14 points as his Big Ten Foreign Tour Team dropped a heartbreaking 95-93 decision to UCC Assigelo in Italy. Assigelo's Giovannia Savvia nailed the game-winning three-pointer with just 1.2 seconds to play to snap the Big Ten's three-game win streak.The final shot was set up just after Penn State's Marlon Smith hit one of two free throws to put the Big Ten up 93-92 with 10.5 seconds left. A quick trip down the floor led to Savvia's game-stealing heroics. The loss drops the Big Ten to 3-1 on its current five-game tour.
Smith had 12 points in the game to go along with two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Three other Big Ten players had ten points in the contest: Delco Rowley of Michigan State, Brandon McKnight of Purdue and Illinois' Warren Carter each hit for ten points to give the conference five players in double-digits.
Rowley and Carter led the Big Ten with seven rebounds each, while Wisconsin's Clayton Hanson had six. Hanson, Smith and Strickland each had three steals as well. Adam Haluska had six points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Penn State's Kevin Fellows had four points and two rebounds.
Assigelo opened up the game with a 26-21 lead after the first quarter, only to see the Big Ten inch back to take a 46-45 halftime lead. Assigelo used a 22-17 edge in the third period to lead by four, 67-63, heading into the final stanza. The game was a close affair until the end when Savvia's heroics ended the game.
The Big Ten lost despite having one of its best shooting days of the tour, hitting 31 of 70 shots from the field, including a 24 of 47 mark from two-point range and a 9 of 23 line from three-point land. The conference hit 18 of 26 free throws as well.
The Big Ten, now 3-1, will close out its five-game tour tomorrow with a game vs. the Cremona Basketball Club in Cremona, Italy. The squad, being coached by Penn State assistant Kurt Kanaskie (filling in for Lion head coach Ed DeChellis - sidelined after surgery last week), will return home on Friday.
