Mamaroneck, N.Y. - Two up, two down. Indiana men's golfer Jeff Overton steamrolled to the Sweet 16 at the 104th U.S. Amateur Championships, defeating former Villanova golfer John Keller, 5 and 4, in the second round of match play.
As was the case in Wednesday's opening-round match, Overton jumped out to an early lead against Keller. The senior birdied the opening hole to gain a 1-up advantage. After the duo recorded pars on the next three holes, Keller bogeyed the par-5 fifth to fall 2-down.
Overton opened up a 4-up lead with a birdie at the par-4 sixth and a par, coupled with a triple bogey by Keller, at the par-4 eighth.
At the ninth, Overton slipped up for the first time in 22 holes of match play, dropping the hole with a bogey 5. That would be his only mistake of the day as he bounced back with a birdie at the par-3 10th to regain his 4-up advantage.
Once again, the golfers garnered pars on the next three holes before Overton closed out the match on the par-4 14th. The second team All-American poured in his fourth birdie of the day as Keller finished with a bogey.
In his two matches, Overton has played 27 holes, carding eight birdies while winning 12 holes and losing only one. He was 3-under-par in the 14 holes this morning and is 4-under in the two matches.
Up next, Overton will face Georgia Tech senior Nicholas Thompson. Thompson defeated Minnesota sophomore Bronson La'Cassie, 3 and 2, to advance. The match is slated to begin at approximately 1:35 p.m. (EDT).
