In singles action, Indiana sophomore Laura McGaffigan advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Caitlin Burke of Wisconsin, 6-1, 6-2. In the opening round, McGaffigan defeated Katie Dulmage of Chicago, 6-0, 6-0. Following the Dulmage victory, McGaffigan posted victories over Ramona Staton, 7-5, 6-3, Kristin Messmer of Ohio State (6-2, 6-0) and Kelly Baritot of Texas (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6)).
Hoosier Kara Zeder opened with a straight set victory over Annie Diedalis of Xavier, 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Christina Svetlic of Northern Illinois, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action, the team of McGaffigan and Zeder fell in the semifinals to Anne Menees of Vanderbilt and Kristina Stastny of Notre Dame, 8-1. In the opening round, McGaffigan/Zeder defeated Luten and Deary, 8-5. Before falling to Menees and Stastny, McGaffigan and Zeder defeated Suydam and Winningham of Dartmouth, 8-5.
"It was a great tournament." associate head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "It was well represented by athletes in the midwest region. I am looking forward to the national tournament.
The original idea of Indiana women's tennis coach Lin Loring, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit is in its 11th year. It is made up of five regional circuits (East, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West) for collegiate players as well as the general public. Each region consists of four consecutive tournaments played during the month of July.
The ITA National Summer Championships is the final tournament of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit. This year's competition will be held in Bloomington August 14-18. The men's and women's singles and doubles champions from this tournament will earn wild cards into the Icy Hot/ITA Men’s and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in October, the first national tournaments of the 2004-05 collegiate tennis season.
