Hoosiers Fall to Bears, 3-1

Trailing 2-0, in the second half, Telian received a pass from junior Lesley Wiler (San Diego, Calif.) and put the ball into the goal, six minutes into the second half to bring IU within one.
Cal's Alana Smith answered back five minutes later with her second goal of the day to provide the margin of victory.
In the first half, California got onto the scoreboard first with a goal by Smith off of an assist from Jenna Long, eight minutes into the match.
"Cal was very polished for the first game of the year," Indiana head coach Amy Robertson said. "They came out confident, aggressive and controlled the game from the start, while we can out a little tentative and nervous."
California extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal by Teela Crosthwaite at the 19 minute mark of the match.
Cal out shot the Hoosiers, 19-11, including 13-1 in the first half. In the second half the Hoosiers became more aggressive, out shooting Cal 11-5, including seven shots on goal.
"It was a game of two different halves," Robertson said. " Cal controlled the first half, while we came out more aggressive in the second half. We kept attacking and just missed out on a couple of goals."
Senior goalkeeper Katie Kanara (Kennett Square, Pa.) had eight saves for IU in the losing effort.
"Tomorrow against Stanford, we just need to come out strong and play to our potential.
IU returns to action on, Sunday, when they travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to take on the Stanford Cardinals beginning a 3 p.m. (CST).
