Bloomington, Ind. - Matt Affolder, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University, has been named assistant volleyball coach at Indiana, head coach Katie Weismiller announced today.
"We are very excited to have Matt Affolder as part of our staff," said Weismiller. "Matt is known for his hard work on the court, in the office and on the recruiting trail. We are looking forward to his energy complimenting the staff this year. Matt's main responsibilities will include team travel, equipment, video breakdown and on-court instruction."
During his tenure at SIU, Affolder handled recruiting, as well as scouting, match preparation and blocking and defensive training. In 2002, his first season at Southern Illinois, Affolder helped guide the Salukis to their first Missouri Valley Conference tournament final and a 23-10 mark, the team's best in 17 seasons.
Affolder is no stranger to the state of Indiana, as he is a native of Decatur. He also has nine years of coaching experience in the state, and he looks forward to making his return.
"I think this is a tremendous opportunity for myself professionally and for my family. Being an Indiana native, it's a great opportunity to get close to home to help build the IU program into the best program in the state and the Big Ten. I think being at a university with the academic and athletic excellence such as Indiana will be outstanding."
From 1999-2001, Affolder spent three years as a volunteer coach at Indiana State, where he worked with middle blockers and right-side hitters. During his time with the Sycamores, Affolder trained five MVC all-conference selections and three members of the MVC All-Newcomer team.
Prior to Indiana State, he spent three years as the head coach at Wapahani High School in Selma, Ind., from 1996-98. He posted a 73-36 record, including three sectional titles, a Class A Elite Eight appearance in 1997 and a Final Four appearance in 1998. In 1998, he was named Class A North Coach of the Year
Affolder was an assistant varsity coach at Muncie Central High School in Muncie, Ind., from 1993-95. He also was the head freshman coach, leading his team to a 23-1 record in two years. While at Muncie Central, the varsity was an impressive 101-10 and reached the Indiana High School Athletic Association Final Four in 1995.
Additionally, Affolder served as a coach for the Munciana (Muncie, Ind.) Volleyball Club for seven years (1993-99), where he coached former Hoosiers Nikki Hill and Hillary Toivonen. Under his watch, the team captured the 1998 USA Volleyball National Championship for the 16 & Under Division. He coached two additional Munciana teams to top 10 finishes nationally and trained 10 USA Volleyball All-Americans.
During his time as a high school coach, Affolder trained 20 Indiana All-State honorees and 10 high school All-Americans.
Along with his college, prep and club coaching, Affolder has six years of summer camp experience at schools such as Notre Dame, Illinois, Ball State, Bowling Green and Michigan State. He also served as an assistant for the USA Youth National Team tryouts.
The Decatur native graduated from Bellmont High School and is a 2002 graduate of Indiana State University with a bachelor's degree in political science. He is married to the former Nicole Turner.
