ARLINGTON, Texas - Five Hoosiers registered double-digit kills as IU downed Arkansas - Little Rock 3-1 (30-32, 30-22, 30-15, 30-21) in its first match of the 2004 Arlington/Hilton UTA Invitational on Friday afternoon.
Indiana hit .297 as a team, and held the Trojans to a .042 mark and 35 errors. The Hoosiers also out blocked the Trojans 9.5 to 4 and out dug them 56 to 51.
"It was a team effort today by both the offense and defense," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "We had a good service game going and we were very effective spreading the ball around, getting everyone involved."
Senior middle blocker Katie Pollom led the Hoosier attack with 14 kills, while freshman outside hitter Christine Nilles posted 11 kills to go with 10 digs and two block assists.
Indiana had a slow start to the match, as the Trojans were able to mount a comeback and take game one 32-30.
"We definitely started the match off very sluggish," said Weismiller. "They came out very aggressive, but we were able to overcome that. Then we just had trouble closing them out to take the game."
The Hoosier defense then stepped up their play, as they held UALR to a -.029 hitting percentage in game two, for a 30-22 IU victory. The offense responded with 14 kills and a .242 hitting percentage in that game, and followed that with a .485 performance in game three as IU rolled to a 30-15 victory in game three to go up 2-1.
"We were more aggressive, especially at the net," said Weismiller. "Our defense played well and took them out of their offensive game and game plan."
The Cream and Crimson held off an early rally to take game four 30-21 to close out their victory. Once again the defense was on top of its game holding the Trojans to a .111 mark.
Junior Mandy Eberle posted 13 kills, while senior Christina Archibald and Lauren Ditteon added 10 kills apiece. Sophomore Tasha Arsenych set up the offense with 48 assists.
IU will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 11, as the Hoosiers close out the tournament with matches against Houston at 1:00 p.m. and host UT-Arlington at 7:00 p.m.
