Hoosiers In Seventh Place

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana men's golf team stands in seventh place after two rounds of the Michigan/Radrick Farms Interco. The Hoosiers shot a team score of 590 on the day, 14 shots off the lead.
"I didn't think we played very well," said head coach Mike Mayer. "I just felt like we did not have a great week of practice and our preparation was lacking."
Senior Jeff Overton finished the day at a three-way tie for third place with a team best 143 (-1), just five shots off the lead. The Evansville native shot a 73 in round one and improved that with a 70 in round two. Overton had the only IU eagle on the day, putting in his third shot on the par-5 fifth.
"Jeff led the way, but like the rest of the team I felt like he had some lapse in play," said coach Mayer. "He double bogeyed the 16th hole in round one and then bogeyed the last whole in round two, so he could have played better."
Fellow classmate Heath Peters also had a strong day on the course putting in nine birdies on the day, third most in the field. The senior posted a 146 on the day, placing 16th individually, improving with each round with a 74 in the first and a 72 in the second.
"Peters played well, but just like Jeff he let some chances go by," said Mayer. "He is one of the top players in the country and I just felt like he could have performed better."
Junior Oren Hodak and freshman Santiago Quirarte finished tied for 50th place with a 150. Hodak shot a 75 in both, while Quirarte, playing as an individual, fired a 74 in his first collegiate round of play, and followed that with a 74 in the second.
"Santiago is going to get a lot better and be a real good player for us," said coach Mayer. "He started out real strong, but then got a little sluggish, but in all I think he played well for his first tournament. He is still learning the American game as well as the collegiate game, but he will improve throughout the year."
Junior Brad Marek and senior Mark Birkenfeld each finished tied for 50th place, with a score of 152. Mark opened with a 75 in round one and finished with a 77 in round two. Birkenfeld notched a 76 in both rounds of play.
The third and final round of play of the Michigan/Radrick Farms Interco is set for Sunday, Sept. 12.
