ARLINGTON, Texas - The Indiana volleyball team dropped its tournament finale against host UT-Arlington, as the Hoosiers fell 3-0 (30-16, 31-29, 30-28) on Saturday night.
The Hoosiers, winners of two of three in the tournament, moved to 5-2 on the season, while UT-Arlington improved to 8-1 on the year.
"They were very aggressive in the match," said assistant coach Matt Affolder. "Through out the tournament, we were able to control the match with our defense, but they are an underrated team and they made the plays."
IU started the match off slow, as the Hoosiers committed 11 errors and hit only .043 in the first game, a 30-16 loss.
Indiana rebounded with a solid game in game two, but was unable to get a lead from the host school. The story was the same in game three, as the Hoosiers had opportunities late to take the game, but unforced errors gave the Mavericks their second victory in the tournament.
"We had a lot of unforced errors," said Affolder. "We hit a lot of good balls but they were just out, and we were not able to overcome that."
Senior Christine Archibald led the Hoosiers with 13 kills. She also added 10 digs. Freshman Lauren Ditteon posted 11 kills with a .435 attack percentage, while sophomore Lindsay Cochrane led the defense with 17 digs. Sophomore Tasha Arsenych added three kills and nine digs to go with 43 assists.
After holding opponents to under a .150 hitting percentage in the first two matches, the Hoosiers saw the Mavericks hit .341 with just 10 errors. IU was also out dug 64-58 and out blocked 6-4.
"It was definitely a disappointing loss after the way we played the first two matches," said Affolder. "We need to be a lot more disciplined out there, but they deserve all the credit for the way they played."
Defense was the name of the game in the afternoon session, as the Hoosiers defeated Houston 3-1 (30-20, 30-18, 27-30, 30-23) in their first match of the day.
Senior Katie Pollom led the way with 15 kills and two blocks. The middle blocker also posted a .364 hitting percentage. Arsenych ran the offense ending with a career-high 55 assists, while freshman Christine Nilles paced the defense with 18 digs, a new career-high.
The IU defense limited the Cougars to a .170 hitting percentage, forcing 31 errors in the match.
Indiana responded with a .305 attack percentage. The Hoosiers also controlled the serving game, posting 10 service aces to the Cougars four.
Two Hoosiers were awarded for their play, as Pollom and Archibald were named to the all-tournament team. Pollom recorded 39 kills (3.55 kpg.) to go with nine blocks (.82) and six service aces. Archibald posted 37 kills (3.36), 29 digs (2.64) and four blocks (.36).
The Cream and Crimson return to action on Tuesday, Sept 14., as the Hoosiers host in-state rival IPFW. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
