Hoosiers Finish in Ninth Place

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana men's golf team finished its season opening tournament in a tie for ninth place at the Michigan/Radrick Farms Intercollegiate open.
The Cream and Crimson shot a 296 in the third round, ending the tournament with a team score of 886 (+22). There was a three-way tie for first, as Big Ten rivals Wisconsin and Purdue, along with Memphis posted team scores of 871 (+7) on the weekend.
"Just like yesterday, I felt that we were not sharp going into the tournament," said head coach Mike Mayer. "We have a quality team and we will get better, but something was definitely missing from us this weekend."
Senior Jeff Overton was the highest placing Hoosier, finishing the tournament in a tie for 13th place with a score of 218 (+2). Overton posted a 75 in round three after opening the weekend with a 73 and 70, respectively.
Senior Heath Peters and junior Brad Marek finished tied for 24th, with a weekend score of 221 (+5). Marek posted the best IU individual score on the weekend with a 69 in round three, while Peters led the Hoosiers on the weekend with 12 birdies, third most in the tournament.
"Brad played really well today, said coach Mayer. "Peters and Overton played well at times, but then had some moments where they both made some mistakes. Overton had a late double-bogey in every rounds, while Peters had some chances to make better shots."
Senior Mike Birkenfeld and junior Oren Hodak round out the Indiana team, with scores of 229 and 230, respectively. Birkenfeld finished in 62nd place, while Hodak placed 67th.
Freshman Santiago Quirarte was the only other Hoosier participating in the tournament. Quirarte, playing as an individual, finished in 50th place with a 226 (+10).
"We will have some changes for next week, but I know that all these guys could play a lot better," said Mayer. "We are a marked team out there, and we have to go out and expect everyone to play us tough."
The men's golf team will be back on the course on Friday, Sept. 17, as the Hoosiers compete in the Central Regional Preview held at the University of Notre Dame.
