Hoosier Earns Honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana football player Herana-Daze Jones was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his contributions in IU's 30-24 win over No. 24/24 Oregon last weekend. The win snapped Oregon's 21-game non-conference home winning streak.
The Louisville, Ky. native spearheaded an Indiana defense that forced seven turnovers to knock off the nationally-ranked Ducks on the road. The senior safety racked up nine solo tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception and a fumble recovery.
With the Hoosiers leading 30-24 in the fourth quarter, the hosts drove to the Indiana 16-yard line before Jones picked off a pass with only 3:24 left in the game to maintain the lead.
The Hoosiers held the Oregon scoreless in the first half, marking the first time, since Sept., of 1997, that the Ducks' didn't score in the first half.
Jones has started 22 of IU's last 24 games and his eight solo tackles against the Ducks was the third-best total of his career and the interception was his fifth at Indiana.
This is Jones' first Big Ten weekly award and the first for a Hoosier defender since Kris Dielman was honored on September 2, 2002. Jones is the first Hoosier to receive one of the Big Ten's top weekly honors since Gibran Hamdan led IU to its last win over a ranked opponent. Hamdan was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Oct. 14, 2002, two days after he directed Indiana to a come-from-behind 32-29 victory over then No. 23 and eventual Alamo Bowl champion Wisconsin.
Jones and the Hoosiers will return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Lexington, Ky., to face the Wildcats. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. (EST).
