Bloomington, Ind. - Head Coach Clint Wallman's golf team heads to East Lansing, Mich., for the 2004 Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers Golf Course over Sept. 18-19. The Hoosiers open the tournament Saturday with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. ET, before continuing on with the second round later in the evening. IU then concludes play on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The course will play to a yardage of 6,236, par 72.

LAST YEAR AT THE MARY FOSSUM
IU placed ninth out of 16 teams in the 2003 edition of the Mary Fossum Invitational after posting a three-day 946 (310-312-324). Molly Redfearn was the top scoring returning Hoosier at the event with a 238 (80-77-81) to claim 37th place.
WALLMAN REPLACES CARMICHAEL AT HELM
First-year head coach Clint Wallman replaces the legendary Sam Carmichael, who retired last May after 23 years at the helm of the Hoosier program. During a 21-year span from 1984-2004, Indiana was the only team in the Big Ten to place among the top three 17 times, and Carmichael was named Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times.

Hoosiers Close Strong at Lady Northern Invitational
The Indiana women's golf team fired a final round of 318 at the Lady Northern Invitational on Sunday at the University of Michigan Golf Course to finish 14th overall with a score of 969 (324-327-318).
Lissa Putnam was the top finisher for the Hoosiers, shooting 242 (85-80-77). Bethany Brunner and Molly Redfearn finished right on her heels tied for 68th with matching tallies of 244. Brunner posted an 80-84-80 run while Redfearn recorded an 83-83-78 effort.
Also participating for the Hoosiers were Elaine Harris, who finished 77th (78-87-83-248), Kendal Hake, who placed 93rd (83-85-95-263) and Katie Carlson who finished 95th overall (95-80-93-268).
Michigan won the tournament with a score of 881, followed by second-place finisher Ohio State with 885. Other conference foes, Michigan State (fourth-899) and Purdue (fifth-906) rounded out the top five of the tournament.
THE COACH: Clint Wallman is in his first year as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers women's golf team. He comes to IU after helping the University of New Mexico to a pair of back-to-back NCAA Women's Golf Tournament appearances.
Wallman arrives in Bloomington after two seasons as an assistant coach at New Mexico. The Lobos enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history in 2003-04, capped by a 15th place finish at the NCAA Tournament. New Mexico won four regular season tournaments and placed among the top 10 in 10 of the 11 regular season tournaments. The Lobos were nationally ranked among the top 10 for 33 consecutive weeks, including a lofty No. 3 ranking last March. In addition to honorable mention All-American honors for the second straight season, junior Kalin Downs won the Edith Munson Cummings Golf Award, annually presented by the National Golf Coaches Association to an individual based on academic and athletic achievement.
Prior to his tenure at New Mexico, Wallman served as the teaching professional at Indian Canyon Golf Club in Spokane, Wash., and operated his own golf school. Wallman has been lauded as one of the premier golf instructors in the Pacific Northwest. He is a four-time Inland Empire PGA Teacher of the Year (1996-98 and 2000), two-time Pacific Northwest PGA Teacher of the Year (1998-99) and the 1999 Pacific Northwest PING Clubfitter of the Year. Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have twice ranked Wallman among the Top 10 Teachers in Washington state, and in 2003, Golf Digest named Wallman among the top 10 teachers in the region and top 50 in America. Wallman is also a frequent lecturer for PGA of America on teaching and development of video in teaching golf.
Just as he has been recognized for his teaching skills, Wallman has received just as many laurels as a player. The 1990 Chrysler Putting Champion and 1997 Pacific Northwest Regional Putting Champion, Wallman also placed 30th at the 1997 Dave Pelz World Putting Championship.
Wallman twice qualified for the U.S. Open Sectional in 1998 and 2001, and he also won the 1994 Spalding Shootout, the 1999 Inland Empire PGA Championship and the 2002 Rossland Trail Open Championship.
A 1985 graduate of Washington State University with a bachelor's degree in physical education, Wallman was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. The two-time captain won the 1984 Washington State Invitational title and still ranks among the Cougars' all-time leaders in Top 10 finishes. He served as an assistant coach for the Cougars in 1984-85.
Wallman and his wife, Julie, have two daughters, Katie (20) and Chris (18).
