BRIDGMAN, Mich. - Head Coach Mike Mayer's golf squad opened up the Notre Dame Invitational/Central Regional Preview at the incredibly tough Lost Dunes Golf Club in Bridgman, Mich., on Friday with a 304 tally to start the tournament in seventh place. Kent State holds the lead with a 7-over 287, while Big Ten foe Michigan State is in second with a 294.
"Obviously, the golf course was set up as difficult as possible," Mayer said. "They were the most severe greens we will perhaps ever see. We put ourselves in a position to shoot a decent number after the front nine, but the par-5 15th broke our back. We just made too many mistakes coming in. However, we are not far out of contention. We just have to come back tomorrow with a productive round to put ourselves back in the thick of things."
Indiana senior Heath Peters paced the Hoosiers with a fifth-place-tying 2-over 72, which is just four strokes off the lead set by Golden Flash golfer Ryan Yip's 2-under 68
As for the rest of Mayer's charges, junior Scott Seibert and freshman Santiago Quirarte tied for 37th place out of the shoot with a pair of 77 totals, while senior Jeff Overton carded a 78 to tie for 46th place. Junior Brad Marek rounded out IU's first-round performance with a 67th-place-tying 81.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson continue the tournament Saturday at the Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind., with tee times beginning 8 a.m. IU then concludes the tourney on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
