BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana football team will return to the road this weekend when it travels to Lexington, Ky., to face SEC foe Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 6:00 p.m. EST/7:00 p.m. EDT.
IU will play its second road contest of the season after defeating then No. 24/24 Oregon last weekend 30-24 in Eugene. The Hoosiers will look to improve their record to 3-0 for the first time since the 1994 season.
Kentucky, who was idle last week, will welcome the Hoosiers into Commonwealth Stadium for its 2004 home opener. The Wildcats are 0-1 on the season after falling at Louisville 28-0 in their season opener on Sept. 5.
The Hoosiers will look to continue their trend of impressive special team's play. Last weekend senior kicker Bryan Robertson was a perfect three-for-three on field goal attempts. He has connected on 15-straight field goals from inside 40-yards.
Another area of special teams emphasis has been on kickoff returns. Indiana had 123 kickoff return yards at Oregon, with 98 of them coming on a touchdown return by Lance Bennett. The return was the second longest in IU football history. It was the first score for Bennett, who had a team-high return of 70 years last season against Indiana State. It was the first kickoff return since Derin Graham had a 90-yarder vs. Kentucky on Sept. 19, 1999.
In the season opener, IU had 133 kickoff return yards against Central Michigan, including a career-long 71-yarder from Courtney Clency.
Indiana and UK will face off for the 35th time this weekend. IU holds a 17-16-1 advantage over UK, but the Wildcats have won two of the last three meetings. UK defeated Indiana in last year's meeting, 34-17, in Bloomington on Sept. 20. The first meeting between the two teams in Bloomington during the 1893 season ended in a 24-24 tie.
