9/18/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Head Coach Clint Wallman's women's golf squad concluded a grueling 36-hole day at the Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., on Saturday with a 633 (319-314) tally, which included a season-low total of 314 during the second round. The performance was good enough to place the Hoosiers in 10th place overall. Michigan holds the lead with a 609 (306-303), while the hosting Spartans are in second with a 612 (303-309).
"I am extremely pleased with the team's performance today after scoring a season low," Wallman said. "We played really smart and did a lot of things well. I really feel like the team is doing the things we need to do to compete and take it to the next level. I am excited for us to play tomorrow and keep in the direction we are going."
Junior Molly Redfearn lit up the golf course with a 6-over 150 (75-75) to conclude the draining day in a second-place tie with Michigan's Laura Olin. She is just six shots off the lead pace set by Wolverine Brianna Broderick's even-par 144 (72-72).
As for the rest of the crimson-clad contingent, freshman Elaine Harris carded a career-low 4-over 76 second round to lock up a tie for 27th place with a 157 (81-76), while senior Bethany Brunner (84-79) and classmate Lissa Putnam (79-84) posted matching 163s to tie for 51st place. Rookie Kendal Hake finished in 85th place with a 179 (87-92) to round out IU scoring, while senior Katie Carlson recorded an 83rd-place 174 (92-82) playing as an individual.
"If we can get a good, solid performance from everyone tomorrow, we can turn it into some positive results," Wallman said. "I cannot wait to get back on the golf course tomorrow."
Next up, the Cream and Crimson close out the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
