Mary Fossum Day Two (9/19/04)
9/19/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Head Coach Clint Wallman's women's golf squad closed out the Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., on Sunday with a 10th-place 960 (319-314-327), while junior Molly Redfearn provided a major highlight for the Hoosiers with a career day on the links. Michigan claimed the tournament trophy with a 919 (306-303-310) to outpace runner-up Michigan State's tally of 925 (303-309-313).
"I am very positive about a lot of the things we did today," Wallman said. "The team showed a tremendous amount of heart by holding it together and persevering through some challenging circumstances. After they got off to a rough start, they buckled down and focused. We showed ourselves that we can play well even when we get off to a rough start."
Redfearn blazed the course to a career-best tournament performance with a 226 (75-75-76) en route to a second-place tie with Illinois State's Katie Laehn. The effort shattered each of her personal watershed marks as every round this weekend eclipsed her previous career-low of 77 set at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational and the 2002 Legends Shootout. Her 36-hole tally of 150 also bettered her previous standard of 157 set at the 2002 Lady Northern Invitational and the 2002 Legends Shootout.
Additionally, her total of 226 demolished her former best tournament outing at the 2002 Legends when she fired a 234. Last, but certainly not least, her second-place tie crushed her highest placement of a 23rd-place tie at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational.
"Molly played an outstanding tournament," Wallman said. "There were a lot of nationally-ranked players there and she proved that she is capable of being in that class. She had a great mental short game tournament, which is what golf is about. What I am most proud of is that she wasn't hitting as well as she normally does but found a way to get the ball in the hole."
Meanwhile, Michigan's Brianna Broderick claimed the individual crown with a 3-over 219 (72-72-75) to finish just ahead of Redfearn's effort.
As for the rest of Wallman's charges, senior Lissa Putnam posted a career-best effort of her own with a 240 (79-84-77) to tie for 40th place, while classmate Bethany Brunner tied for 62nd place with a 248 (84-79-85). Senior Katie Carlson wound up in 82nd place by recording a 264 (92-82-90) playing as an individual, while freshman Kendal Hake registered a 268 (87-92-89) to tie for 84th place.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson head to Franklin, Ind., over Oct. 4-5, for the Shootout at the Legends held at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course.
