Hoosiers Drop Big Ten Opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In the first match of the Big Ten season, the Indiana volleyball team fell to Purdue, 30-22, 30-20, 30-12, on Wednesday night. The Hoosiers drop to 6-6 on the season and 0-1 in Big Ten play, while the Boilermakers improve to 8-3 and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
Junior Christina Archibald led IU with 10 kills, her 21st straight match with at least 10 kills. Freshman Lauren Ditteon added nine kills with a .333 hitting percentage.
After falling behind 9-6 in game one, the Hoosiers evened things up at 9-9 behind a Ditteon kill and a service ace from sophomore Lindsay Cochrane. The teams remained deadlocked at 16-16 before the Boilermakers regained a three-point advantage at 20-17.
A kill by freshman Christine Nilles cut the lead to 20-18, but that is as close as Indiana would get. Purdue reeled off 10 of the game's final 14 points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Ditteon led IU with four kills with a .571 hitting percentage, while seniors Katie Pollom and Archibald joined junior Mandy Eberle with three kills apiece.
Looking to even the match, the Hoosiers started quickly in game two by scoring five of the first seven points. Nilles, Ditteon and Archibald accounted for three of the points with kills. However, the Boilermakers responded with a 7-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 9-7.
Indiana recaptured the lead at 10-9 with three straight points, but it would be its last lead of the game. Purdue tallied seven of the next nine points to take an insurmountable 16-11 lead and went on to win game two, 30-20.
Once again, Ditteon led the Hoosiers with five kills, while Cochrane added six digs.
In game three, Purdue closed out the match with a 30-12 victory.
Junior Leah Wischmeier led the Boilermakers with 17 kills and a .519 hitting percentage, while senior Kim McConaha drilled 14 kills, hit .440 and compiled 11 digs.
IU returns to action on Saturday, Sept.25, against the 13th-ranked Fighting Illini of Illinois. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. in Champaign, Ill.
