Hoosiers Drop Big Ten Opener

Michigan got onto the board three minutes into the first half as Mary Fox scored on an assist from Jessica Blake to give the Wolverines a 1-0 advantage.
Indiana had a chance to even the score in the first half, after being awarded a penalty stroke after sophomore Lydia Schrott was tripped. Sophomore Mallory Reabold took the penalty stroke and UM's goalkeeper Beth Riley turned away her attempt.
In the 24th minute, Wolverine forward, Jill Civic scored the first of her two goals on the day to give Michigan a 2-0. In the 51st minute, Civic gave UM a 3-0 lead.
The Hoosiers responded four minutes later with sophomore Morgan Miller's fourth goal of the year off assists from Schrott and freshman Meredith Brown. Michigan, then responded with its fourth goal of the game 36 seconds later to give them a 4-1 lead.
"Michigan's last goal was a huge momentum change," Miller said. "I can't tell you how frustrating it was. We just didn't mark our girls. She came right down the center of the field. It was a beautiful goal that should have never happen."
IU was out shot by Michigan 15-6, including an 8-3 margin in shots on goals. The Wolverines also had a 9-6 advantage on corners.
"We gave up to many penalty corners today," head coach Amy Robertson said. "The key was Michigan was more aggressive than we were. The score didn't indicate the closeness of the game. The second half hurt us because we only mustered one shot."
Goalkeeper Katie Kanaka added four saves in the losing effort.
"We will use this game as momentum for Sunday," Robertson said. "I believe that we are getting it now and are playing a smarter game. The key is now we have to play with more confidence and I think we will do that on Sunday against Iowa."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26 when they play host to Iowa at the Mellencamp Pavilion with action beginning at 1 p.m.
