BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers continue their monster road trip to open up the Big Ten season as they head to East Lansing, Mich., to tangle with the Spartans of Michigan State on Oct. 1. In its last action, Indiana fell to 13th-ranked Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 25, 3-0. IU is 6-7 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State enters the contest with a 5-5 overall ledger and a 0-2 conference mark. In 2003, the Hoosiers went 0-2 against MSU. The Spartans picked up a 3-1 victory in Bloomington and scored a 3-0 triumph in East Lansing.
Last week, the Cream and Crimson suffered a pair of defeats in its initial league action of the season. Indiana opened the week by dropping a 3-0 decision to Purdue on Wednesday, Sept. 22, before taking the loss in Huff Hall against the Illini.
Senior outside hitter Christina Archibald paced IU last week with 18 kills and 14 digs, while senior middle blocker Katie Pollom ended the week with 14 kills and a pair of blocks for the Hoosiers.
Michigan State heads into Friday's match with a 5-5 record, including a 3-0 mark in East Lansing. The Spartans extended their losing streak to five games after dropping a pair of conference tilts to top-ranked Minnesota (0-3) and Iowa (1-3).
Against the Golden Gophers on Friday, Sept. 24, senior Kim Schram led Michigan State with 15 kills and eight digs, while freshman Maggie Griffin added 23 assists to the MSU effort. The Spartans, however, fell 16-30, 18-30, 19-30 to a dominant Minnesota squad. The next night, junior Marley Bellwood had a career-high 23 digs and Schram tallied 20 kills on .345 hitting in a tough loss to Iowa, 30-24, 28-30, 17-30, 20-30.
Schram paces the Spartan squad with 140 kills, while connecting at a .267 clip against opposing defenses. Griffin serves as the primary setter for Michigan State with 445 of the team's total 499 assists.
Michigan enters this week with an 11-2 record, including a 1-1 league ledger. U-M opened its week successfully by downing Notre Dame, 3-1, on Sept. 28, after splitting its contests last week with a 3-0 road blanking of Iowa on Sept. 24, before struggling against top-ranked Minnesota, 0-3, on Sept. 25. Next, Michigan faces off with Purdue in Ann Arbor on Oct. 1. The Wolverines then battle with the Hoosiers on Saturday, Oct. 2. Michigan is 6-1 thus far at home.
Against the Irish, senior Jennifer Gandolph registered a season-high 26 kills, including eight in the deciding game four, to lead Michigan to a triumph over Notre Dame, 30-23, 30-25, 27-30, 32-30. Four Wolverines posted double-digit kills, with Gandolph and senior Lisa Gamalski notching double-doubles. Gandolph added 14 digs to her performance, while Gamalski posted her fifth consecutive double-double with 66 assists and 16 digs.
Gandolph leads the Wolverines with 144 kills and 3.60 kills per game, while Sarah Allen serves as the primary defender with 164 digs. Lyndsay Miller paces Michigan with 57 blocks, five of which are the solo variety.
