IU Men Compete in Cream and Crimson

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's swimming and diving team will compete in its preseason Cream and Crimson intrasquad battle. The meet will be held at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at 4 p.m. on Friday.
The two squads will face off in a 16-event meet. The events in this season's Cream and Crimson competition will be the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 freestyle, the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 100 and 200 breaststroke, the 100 and 200 butterfly, the 200 IM and the one- and three-meter diving events as well as the 200 medley and 400 freestyle medleys.
In last season's intrasquad affair, the Crimson came away with the victory, 136-107, as they won eight of the 13 events on the day.
For the second consecutive season, Murph Halasz and Richard Bryant led their respective teams with two individual victories. They each won a pair of events at the 2003 Cream and Crimson.
Last season, the Indiana men's swimming and diving team continued to take big strides toward returning to prominence in 2003-04. The Hoosiers earned their best finish at the NCAA Championships since 1995 and had their first All-America swimmers since 1996. Kevin Swander became the school's first U.S. National Champion since 1980, and he became the first Hoosier to earn Big Ten Swimmer of the Championship honors.
The Hoosiers had five swimming All-Americans and scored the most points since 1991 at the NCAA Championships. The swimming program also captured its first Big Ten Relay and Big Ten individual championships since the 1997 season. IU had seven All-Big Ten performers. Swander, Halasz, Matt Leach and Claes Andersson were all first team selections while Kyle Ruth, Mike Payne and Colin Russell were all second team choices.
The diving team continued it tradition of excellence. The program won its 11th straight U.S. National Combined (men's and women's) Championship. The men's team also had its best finish, second, since winning the title in 1998. Brian Mariano and Marc Carlton both earned U.S. National Team honors for their synchro performance. Carlton was also a National Team member on the three-meter. Ryan Fagan was the only Hoosier diver to compete collegiately in 2003-04. He advanced to his first Big Ten final as he made the championships in all three events. He also earned honorable mention All-America honors on the 10-meter platform.
Additionally, Dr. Jeff Huber earned his seventh straight National Coach of the Year Award.
