Overton Second, Hoosiers Fifth After 36 Holes

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Competing in one of the premier tournaments in the northeast, the Indiana men's golf team sits in fifth place with 591 (298-293) at the Adams Cup. The Hoosiers trail third-place Charlotte by four shots and fourth-place Rhode Island by two shots.
Michigan State leads the tournament, holding a 12-stroke lead over Georgia Southern. The Spartans shot 572 (281-291) for the first 36 holes.
Leading the way for IU is senior Jeff Overton, who sits in second place after a 4-under-par 68 and a 71 in round two. The Evansville, Ind., native trails Jon David Kennedy of Georgia Southern (69-69) by one stroke heading into the final 18.
"Jeff's first round really kept the team in the thick of things," said head coach Mike Mayer. "He had a chance to go real low in round two, but made some mistakes. However, he is playing well and is in position to win this tournament."
Overton's 68 was his second straight round in the 60s. In his last four rounds, the All-American candidate has carded three rounds under par and he is 8-under-par.
Along with Overton, junior Heath Peters fired a 149 (75-74), good for a tie for 17th place. Peters sits one shot ahead of junior Aaron Walters, who is tied for 21st place. Playing in his first tournament this season and the second of his career, the Bloomington, Ind., native ended round two with a 74 after an opening-round 76.
Additionally, junior Brad Marek concluded the day in a tie for 45th place with 155 (79-76), and freshman Santiago Quirarte bounced back with a 74 in the second round following an 83 in round one. Quirarte is tied for 55th place entering the final round.
"Overall, we came back in the afternoon round and really had a nice round going, but we struggled down the stretch. We still have an opportunity to move up the leaderboard if we come back tomorrow with a strong final round," said Mayer.
Overton looks for his sixth career title, and the Hoosiers look to improve on their fifth-place standing in the final round of the tournament on Tuesday. Tee times are slated to begin at 8 a.m. (EDT) at the Newport National Golf Club.
