Fog Halts Overton, IU's Chances at Adams Cup

NEWPORT, R.I. -- With a thick fog rolling into the Newport National Golf Club, the final round of the Adams Cup was canceled and the Indiana men's golf team finished in fifth place. Due to the cancellation, the scores reverted back to the second round, where the Hoosiers fired a 591 (298-293).
Michigan State won the tournament by 12 strokes over Georgia Southern. The Spartans shot 572 (281-291). Charlotte (287-300) finished four shots ahead of IU for third place, and Rhode Island (297-292) finished two shots clear of IU for fourth.
The teams were able to play 13 holes before the fog made its way in. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the timing could not have been any worse. Indiana was making a charge up the leaderboard behind the brilliant play of senior Jeff Overton. The Evansville, Ind., native was 5-under-par, closing in on his sixth career championship.
Additionally, senior Heath Peters and freshman Santiago Quirarte were 1-over-par, while junior Aaron Walters sat at 2-over and junior Brad Marek was 4-over.
"It's very disappointing we didn't get a chance to finish what was really a very good, solid round for us," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "We were in position to make a move on the field. How far up the leaderboard we would have charged, we'll never know. It's always unfortunate when you don't get to finish a tournament, but we played very well today."
Leading the way for IU was Overton, who finished in second place for the sixth time in his career after a 4-under-par 68 and a 71 in round two. Overton was clipped by Jon David Kennedy of Georgia Southern (69-69) by one stroke.
"Jeff had an outstanding event, finishing in second place. It would have been nice to see if he could have captured the title, but sometimes things don't work out as you hope," said Mayer.
Overton's opening-round 68 was his second straight round in the 60s. In his last four rounds, the All-American candidate has carded three rounds under par and he is 8-under-par. A semifinalist at this summer's U.S. Amateur Championships, Overton now has 17 career top five's and 22 career top 10's.
Along with Overton, Peters fired a 149 (75-74), good for a tie for 16th place. The Garrett, Ind., native moved up one spot due to a pair of disqualifications. Peters' finish is his best this season and his third straight top 25 in three events this season.
Peters finished one shot ahead of Walters, who tied for 19th place. Playing in his first tournament this season and the second of his career, the Bloomington, Ind., native was the beneficiary of the disqualifications to match his tie for 19th at last season's Hoosier Invitational. Walters ended round two with a 74 after an opening-round 76.
"Aaron Walters had a nice event for his first collegiate tournament outside the state of Indiana. His strong play gives us more options in our lineup," said Mayer.
Additionally, Marek concluded the tournament in a tie for 43rd place with 155 (79-76), and freshman Santiago Quirarte bounced back with a 74 in the second round following an 83 in round one. Quirarte closed the event tied for 53rd place.
The Hoosiers will take a week off before returning to the links for the Xavier Invitational in Loveland, Ohio. The event will be held at the Oasis Golf Club on Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 11-12.
