In the overtime period, Miller scored her second goal of the season off a rebound from Mallory Reabold, three minutes into the period to give the Hoosiers the win.
"I really don't know what happen," Miller said. "I turned around and the ball was there. I thought that when I hit it that it was going to hit the goalie, but there was some open space in the net and it went in."
Indiana, who defeated Southwest Missouri State, 4-0 last season, knew that they were going to have a tough game today.
"We came and scouted them yesterday against Ball State," Miller said. "They had two extremely good players and they really did a good job of bringing it to us."
Southwest Missouri State got on the board first with an earlier goal by Sarah Wozney, one minute into the game. IU tied the game up at one, with a goal by Reabold off of an assist from junior Amelia Quane.
Two minutes later, Quane gave the Hoosiers a one goal lead as she tipped in a pass from sophomore Lydia Schrott. At the 46th minute mark in the second half, the Bears tied the score up at two with a goal from Bryndis Henrikson.
Indiana responded with a very impressive goal by Schrott, as she took a pass at midfield and weaved her way through the SMS defense to give the Hoosiers a 3-2 lead.
With IU holding on to a one-goal lead, SMS tied the game up at three with a goal by Gabby Gomez late in the second half.
"We has seen that opportunity a few times earlier in the game." head coach Amy Robertson said, referring to Miller's game winning goal. "It was great that it was our sweeper (Miller) because I had told her earlier in the game to not be afraid to attack."
For the game, IU shot a school record 33 shots, breaking the previous mark of 31 set on October 20, 2002 against Lindenwood. IU also added 14 corners, one off of the school record.
Reabold had a game high nine shots, while Schrott and junior Lesley Wiler added six. Goalkeeper Katie Kanara added seven saves in the win.
IU returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 11, when they face off against Appalachian State at 1 p.m. at the Mellencamp Pavilion.
