Bloomington, Ind. - It took a late Hoosier goal against an aggressive Oregon State team, but for the second time in as many years the Indiana men's soccer team won the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The No. 1 Hoosiers defeated Oregon State, 3-1, and won the classic on goals scored. No. 9 Notre Dame also completed the classic with a 2-0 record, but the Hoosiers outscored the Irish, 6-4 over the Classic.
Sophomore forward Jacob Peterson was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Classic, while senior goalkeeper Jay Nolly was named the Fair Play Award winner. The Hoosiers had four representatives on the All-Tournament team as Peterson, senior Danny O'Rourke, junior Brian Plotkin and sophomore Julian Dieterle were honored. Boston University's Chad Comroe was named the Defensive MVP after setting a single-game record with 14 saves.
The All-Tournament team included: senior goalkeeper Chris Sawyers of Notre Dame, senior midfielder Jack Stewart of Notre Dame, sophomore forward Justin McGeeney of Notre Dame, Comroe of Boston, junior midfielder Jamie Johnson of Boston University, sophomore forward Robbie Findley of Oregon State and junior forward Brett Gardner of Oregon State.
The Hoosiers jumped on top early thanks to senior captain Danny O'Rourke. The Columbus, Ohio, native registered his first goal in a Hoosier uniform at the 17:27 mark. Sophomore Josh Tudela led O'Rourke into the right side of the 18-yard box. O'Rourke went far post and scored into the left side of the net.
Sophomore forward Jacob Peterson nearly made it a two-goal lead with just over a minute remaining in the first half of play. Sophomore forward Kevin Robson led the ball forward to his running mate. Peterson broke away and tried to cut the ball on net, but he cut it too much and the shot was wide.
Oregon State netted the match at one early in the second half of play. Off a corner kick just over 4 minutes into the half, the Beavers pulled even. Bryan Jordan's corner found the head of forward Ryan Johnson. Johnson scored on the header for his second goal of the season.
Indiana responded just 37 seconds later when sophomore back Julian Dieterle netted his first goal of the year. Junior midfielder Brian Plotkin flipped the ball to the right side of the box, where Dieterle headed it near post just past the diving Oregon State goalkeeper, Jason Mariner. Junior midfielder Jordan Chirico was also credited with the assist on the goal.
In the 75th minute, Peterson had a pair of prime scoring opportunities. After Ambersley led Peterson forward, he broke away from the defense. Mariner was up to the task in net for OSU as he made the diving stop. Peterson corralled the rebound, but his second attempt went just wide. Two minutes later, Peterson was again denied by Mariner on a diving save to his left.
Peterson finally found the scoring column with just over four minutes remaining. The Portage, Mich., native cut a shot to his left just past Mariner. Robson registered his team-leading third assist on the season with the tally.
The goal proved to be a big one for the Hoosiers' Classic chances. Indiana and Notre Dame each went 2-0 in the classic. The next tiebreaker was goal differential. As a result of the Irish's 2-1 win over Oregon State and 2-0 victory over Boston, they had a goal differential of three. The Hoosiers final goal evened the goal differential at three. IU won the Classic after outscoring Notre Dame, 6-4.
The Hoosiers will return to action next weekend when they travel to South Bend for the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. The Hoosiers will take on Cal-State Fullerton on Sept. 10 at 5:00 p.m. They will then face Evansville at 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 12.
