Indiana vs. Oregon Game Notes

One week after a convincing 41-10 victory over Central Michigan at Memorial Stadium, Indiana travels to No. 25/23 Oregon, Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m. EST at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.
HOOSIER HEADLINES
The Hoosiers' 41-10 triumph marked the best single-game scoring output of head coach Gerry DiNardo's tenure at Indiana, and it was IU's most convincing season-opening win since a 40-6 victory at Toledo on Sept. 7, 1996. Indiana's 41 points were the most since the Hoosiers scored 56 against Northwestern on Nov. 3, 2001.
Oregon owns a 2-0 lead in the all-time series between the two schools. On Nov. 16, 1963, IU lost to the Ducks, 28-22, in Portland. On Nov. 14, 1964, Oregon handed Indiana a 29-21 setback.
Although this is just the third meeting ever between Oregon and Indiana, this marks the second straight year that the Hoosiers visit a Pac-10 Conference opponent in their second game of the season. On Sept. 6, 2003, IU suffered a 38-13 loss at Washington.
The Central Michigan game marked the first time since Oct. 23, 1999, that Indiana won a game despite being outgained offensively. In 1999, IU defeated Iowa, 38-31, even though the Hoosiers were outgained 552-357.
Indiana's veteran defensive front seven recorded four quarterback sacks against the Chippewas, marking the first time since Aug. 31, 2002 (William & Mary), that IU recorded at least four quarterback sacks in a game.
After missing each of the last two seasons with a knee injury, sixth-year senior Adam Braucher returned to the Hoosier lineup when he attempted a PAT in the opening quarter of the play. In his first game back, Braucher was 4-of-5 on extra points.
Over the last two seasons, Indiana has moved from 11th (116.5 in 2002) to sixth (155.2 in 2003) in the Big Ten in rushing. The Hoosiers have carried this momentum to 2004, picking up 203 yards on the ground against CMU. This is the fifth time in DiNardo's tenure that the Hoosiers have ecclipsed the 200-yard rushing plateau as a team.
Indiana ranked ninth in the Big Ten in red zone offense (76.7 percent, 23-of-30) in 2003. The Hoosiers showed improvement in that area against Central Michigan, capitalizing on four of five opportunities inside the CMU 20-yard line.
TOUGH ROAD AHEAD
The Oregon game marks the first of five ranked opponents for Indiana. In addition to the Ducks, IU faces No. 7/8 Michigan, No. 9/9 Ohio State, No. 23/25 Minnesota and No. t-23/24 Purdue.
The last time Indiana faced the No. 23 team in the nation was on Oct. 12, 2002, when the Hoosiers overcame a 19-point deficit late in the third quarter to defeat eventual Alamo Bowl champion Wisconsin, 32-29.
BALANCED GROUND GAME
Four different Indiana players (BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Chris Taylor, Yamar Washington and Matt LoVecchio) each scored a rushing touchdown against Central Michigan. This marks the first time since Sept. 17, 1994, that four different IU players each scored at least one rushing touchdown in the same game. Alex Smith, John Paci, Brett Law and Jermaine Chaney each reached the end zone that day in Indiana's 59-29 victory at Kentucky.
ROAD WARRIORS
Indiana is looking for its first victory over a ranked opponent since Nov. 10, 2001, when IU downed then-No. 23 Michigan State in East Lansing, 37-28.
POINTS TO PORTER
Freshman cornerback Tracy Porter made quite an impact in his debut, recording two interceptions and two pass breakups. He returned one of the interceptions 96 yards for a touchdown, the longest Hoosier interception return for a touchdown since Sept. 10, 1994, when Alfonzo Thurman returned an interception 97 yards for a touchdown against Miami (Ohio). Porter's 96-yard return for a score is the best by an IU newcomer since Tim Wilbur picked off a pass and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown at Michigan State on Oct. 21, 1978. Porter's two interceptions in one game are the best by an Indiana player since Greg Yeldell had three picks at Michigan on Oct. 24, 1998.
THIRD DOWN IS THE CHARM
Another key to Indiana's victory over Central Michigan was the Hoosiers' third down efficiency. IU converted 11 of 14 (.786) third downs against the Chippewas, the best single-game third down efficiency of DiNardo's tenure in Bloomington.

MAXIMIZING THEIR TIME
Despite the fact that Central Michigan posted a slight edge in time of possession (30:25-29:35), Indiana still posted a 31-point victory. The last time that Indiana won despite facing a deficit in time of possession was when it downed then-No. 23 Wisconsin, 32-29 on Oct. 12, 2002.
GOOD RETURNS
Indiana had 133 kickoff return yards against Central Michigan, including a career-long 71-yarder from Courtney Clency. The Hoosiers' 133 yards is their best single-game effort since Sept. 13, 2003, when IU had 147 yards against Indiana State. Ironically, Clency's previous career-high kick return was a 51-yarder against the Syrcamores.
