Spotlight on Kevin Mathews

Kevin Mathews registered a .531 batting average as a junior in 2003 and a .490 batting average as a senior, as he was selected team MVP both seasons at Upper St. Clair High School. The 5-10 outfielder from Pittsburgh garnered all-section and first team all-state honors for his efforts.
A three-year letterman under head coach Jerry Malarky, Mathews broke the school-record 25-game hitting streak that was previously held by former Hoosier and major leaguer Kevin Orie with a 31-game hitting streak. Additionally, he swiped 22 stolen bases in 22 attempts.
An outstanding prep football player, Mathews lettered three years and, in addition to earning team MVP honors, he was named all-state and Big 33. Mathews also earned Area Player of the Year honors.
The son of Richard and Cindy Mathews has three brothers, Eric, Bryan and Gordon. Kevin plans to study sport marketing and management.
