IU Defeats Purdue in Double OT

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In a game that lived up to the Indiana-Purdue rivalry, the Hoosiers captured a 75-73 double overtime thriller against the Boilermakers in Big Ten action on Saturday afternoon in Mackey Arena. IU evens its record to 7-7 on the year and improves to 2-1 in Big Ten action, while Purdue falls to 4-10 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.Junior guard Bracey Wright led all scorers with a game-high 23 points. Freshman forwards D.J. White and Robert Vaden scored double-figures for IU with 16 and 11 points respectively. White grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Wright corralled seven to go along with four assists in 48 minutes of action.
Freshman guard A.J. Ratliff had a solid game with seven points, six rebounds and a career-high four blocks in 40 minutes.
The match-up got off to a sluggish start as the teams combined to shoot 3-of-19 from the floor over the first six minutes. The Boilermakers missed their first six shots from the field, while the Hoosiers misfired on their first four attempts.
With Purdue ahead 8-3, a three-pointer by Ratliff trimmed the lead, but junior guard David Teague answered with a triple of his own to move the lead back to five at 11:58.
The Boilermakers led 20-17 until sophomore guard Roderick Wilmont cut the margin to one with a steal and a pair of free throws. Junior forward Matt Kiefer drained a long three-pointer on Purdue's next possession to move the advantage back to 23-19 with 4:57 remaining.
Purdue would outscore the Hoosiers 5-3 over the final three minutes of the half to take a 28-22 advantage into the locker room.
Kiefer and junior forward Carl Landry scored on back-to-back possessions to give Purdue a double-digit lead, 32-22, two minutes into the half.
The Hoosiers went on a 12-0 run over the next 5:30, capped by a block and break-a-way dunk from Ratliff to take a 34-32 lead. Over the run, White and Wright scored four points apiece, while freshman forward James Hardy had a tip-in, to give IU its first lead since a 1-0 advantage to start the game.
Ratliff stole the ball on Purdue's next trip down the court, led the fast break and dished to Hardy for another basket.
Teague ended a seven minute scoring drought for the Boilermakers with a three-pointer to cut the IU lead to 36-35.
Purdue evened the game at 39-39 with 8:59 to play, but a Wright lay-up on a great feed from White pushed the Hoosiers ahead by a pair. Purdue regained the advantage, 42-41, when Teague was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three shots from the charity stripe.
Back-to-back triples from Vaden and Hardy, the first of his career, gave IU a 47-42 lead. Teague hit another jumper to cut the lead to three with 4:51 to go. It was Purdue's first field goal in over five minutes.
Junior guard Marshall Strickland made his first basket of the game, a tough runner in the lane, to put the Hoosiers ahead 49-46. Senior guard Andrew Ford hit a three-pointer to even the contest at 49-49 with fewer than three minutes remaining.
Wright and Landry each made three free throws as the game stayed deadlocked at 52-52 with under one minute to play.
Purdue grabbed the lead when Teague nailed a three-pointer from about five feet beyond the arc, but Strickland charged down the court on IU's next possession and converted a three-point play to even the game at 55-55 with 19.2 left.
Purdue would miss its final opportunity to win the and the game headed into overtime.
In the first overtime, Strickland made a reverse lay-up to even the game, 59-59, with 2:26 to play. Ratliff made a runner in the lane with 42.2 to play, but Landry answered with a pair of free throws at 22.5 to keep the game deadlocked.
Strickland rebounded a Wright miss, got fouled in the lane and converted both free throws to give IU a 63-61 advantage with 0.9 seconds to go.
In Purdue's final attempt to even the game, Landry caught a court-length pass from Ford, turned and made a basket in the paint, while being fouled, to even the game at 63-63. The officials reviewed the play and even though Landry had the ball in hand's as the clock expired, the play was allowed to continue because he was fouled in the act of shooting. Landry stepped to the free throw line with no time on the clock, looking to seal a victory for Purdue, but missed his one attempt and the game went into a second overtime.
In the second overtime, White scored six of the first seven points for Indiana, as it opened a 70-65 lead. Senior guard Brandon McKnight and freshman guard Xavier Price each connected on triples, sandwiched around a pair of Vaden free throws, to trim the IU lead to 72-70 with 14.2 to play.
Wright made two free throws, but Teague responded with a trey with 5.7 seconds to play, shaving the Cream and Crimson advantage to 74-73.
Wright would make one of two from the free throw line and McKnight missed a desperation three-pointer for the games final margin.
Teague and Landry each scored 21 points for the Boilermakers, while Teague grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Indiana will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 8:00 p.m. (EST), against Michigan Assembly Hall. The game will be televised by ESPN Plus and can also be heard live on the IU Radio Network with Don Fischer (play-by-play), Todd Leary (analysis) and Joe Smith (pre game, halftime and post game).
