BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana returns a pair of talented defenders from last season's squad in juniors Emily Schmitt and Clare Meadows. Schmitt started 22 of 29 matches in 2004. She was one of two Hoosiers during the 2004 campaign to have 20 or more goals, assists and steals. She finished the year tied for second on the team in assists (21) and fourth in steals (26).
Meadows has been valuable over the last two seasons off the bench for the Hoosiers. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native appeared in 28 matches in 2004, amassing 12 goals, 15 assists and 23 steals. Meadows is the school-record holder for steals in a match with nine against Washington & Jefferson in 2003.
The Hoosiers will welcome a freshman to the fold at the defender position. Linda Calvert will make the transition from offensive center in high school to defense at the college level. Calvert is a Temple, Calif., product, who was an honorable mention NISCA All-American in 2004.
"We are pretty solid at the defender position starting with Emily Schmitt," King said. "She was our primary defender last season. With Linda Calvert coming in and Clare Meadows, we are pretty deep at that position. We have good size and speed at the defender position, and I am comfortable with what we are going to be able to do there."
