Attacker Preview

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers return a large number of experienced players at the attacker position. The group is headed by a pair of Canadian Junior National Team players in junior Janis Pardy and sophomore Kristin Zernicke. Pardy was one of two Hoosiers to have 20 or more goals, assists and steals on the season in 2004. She was a part-time starter making 15 starts, while playing in all 29 matches for the Hoosiers. Pardy had seven matches with two goals in 2004, finishing the season ranked third on the team with 27.
Zernicke led the Hoosiers in steals during the 2004 season with 46 steals. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native started all 29 matches for the Hoosiers compiling 17 goals and 20 assists on the campaign.
"I think this is going to be the position of most improvement for our team based on what I have seen in the fall," King said. "We start with the two Canadians in Janis (Pardy) and Kristin (Zernicke). Both have great heads for the game with super ball handling skills. They will direct a lot of the offense from their position. They will have the ball a lot controlling flow."
The Hoosiers will also look to sophomore Kara Woolly and seniors Krista Peterson and Kandace Waldthaler to help out at the attacker position. Woolley turned in a solid freshman campaign in 2004, appearing in 25 matches. She had 22 goals, 10 assists and 20 steals on the year.
Woolley earned CWPA Western Division Player of the Week honors on March 25 after her performance against five conference foes. In a 19-1 victory over Penn State-Behrend, Woolley matched a school record with five assists.
"I saw a lot of improvement out of Kara Woolley," King said. "She has gotten smarter about shot selection and in her decisions with the ball."
IU's top two scorers in 2004 were Waldthaler and Peterson with 41 and 60 goals, respectively. Waldthaler and Peterson were both first team All-CWPA selections a season ago, and Peterson was one of eight players from outside of the state of California to earn American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America honors with her honorable mention selection. It was the second straight season Peterson had earned both honorable mention All-America honors and first team all-conference accolades.
"Kandace Waldthaler will move out and take some touches at the attacker position, which just makes us deeper and more dangerous at that position," King said. "Kandace is a good solid player. Krista Peterson will be handling all those duties as a left-hander. She will drive the offense on the left side of the pool. Our ability to score goals from the attacking position should improve quite a bit this year."
Indiana will get added depth at the attacker position from juniors Bridget McKeon and Courtney Livak, sophomores Kourtney Schepman and Jaclyn Tameris and freshman Brittany Estrada.
McKeon had played in 62 matches over the last two seasons, including 25 starts in 2004. She had amassed 32 goals, 30 assists and 48 steals over her first two seasons with the Cream and Crimson. Livak is coming off an injury that kept her out of the 2004 campaign. During her freshman season in 2003, she was valuable off the bench scoring 10 goals with eight assists and 39 steals.
Schepman and Tameris gained valuable experience during their freshman campaigns in 2004. Schepman proved to be a scoring threat when she was in the water. The El Segundo, Calif., product netted three hat tricks on the season with 14 goals in 17 matches. Tameris played in 19 matches for IU in 2004. She finished the year with six goals, seven assists and 23 steals. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native had three matches for four steals in her first season with the Cream and Crimson.
Estrada joins the Hoosiers after prepping at Bonita Vista High School in Coronado, Calif. She was first team All-Metro League and All-CIF selection. Estrada was the Metro League Player of the Year in 2004 and Bonita Vista High School's Female Athlete of the Year.
