BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The strength of Indiana over the last three seasons has been the play at the center position. The Hoosiers have developed two All-Americans in Peterson and Kristin Stanford, as well as three first team All-CWPA choices with Waldthaler joining the group.
"Center has been the strength of our group of the last three years, and I think that will continue to be," King said.
In 2005, the Hoosiers will mix youth and experience at the center position to find the right ingredients. Freshman Carolyn Conway will be IU's primary at the center position in 2005. Conway was the Southern California Player of the Year during her senior campaign at Newport Harbor High School.
"With Carolyn, Kandace, Peterson and a few other people, who will be able to post up, I am really confident that we will be able to generate a lot of offense whether it is straight goals or drawing ejections. I look for that to be the strength of our team. I don't know that there are that many teams out there that have that many people who can guard at the center."
"Carolyn Conway will end up taking quite a few touches as the primary," King said. "She is coming off a year of development that is rarely seen. She came from somewhat over looked to the player of the year in Southern California. From what I have seen from her in the fall, she is doing nothing but getting better."
Peterson and Waldthaler led the Hoosiers offense in 2004. The duo not only ranked 1-2 in goals, but hat tricks and drawn ejections. Peterson had nine hat tricks last season followed by Waldthaler with seven. Waldthaler led IU with 50 ejections earned, while Peterson was second with 36.
"I thought Kandace did a tremendous job of improving into a position where she was a solid primary center," King said. "Now she will be even better this year because she won't have to be the primary."
Sophomore Claire Nicholson proves more depth for IU at the center position. Nicholson played in 17 matches during her freshman campaign for the Hoosiers. She finished the year with eight goals, 11 assists and 16 steals.
