IU Knocks Off Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Like two heavyweight fighters standing toe-to-toe and dueling it out, Midwestern rivals No. 11 Indiana and No. 9 Michigan went punch for punch on the first day of the Michigan Invitational. For the first time since 2000, the Indiana water polo team defeated Michigan, 7-6, in a back-and-forth affair at Canham Natatorium. Indiana had a 15-game losing streak against the Wolverines snapped with the victory. Indiana improved to 1-1 on the season.
"This is a big win for us both physically and mentally," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We needed to get a win like this, but we also need to remember that it is only the beginning. We want to finish our season here at the NCAA Championships in May. I felt like this was the first time that we were able to match Michigan. I was also very pleased that the girls responded physically after not doing so in the morning against UCLA."
With the match tied at four entering the fourth period, the Hoosiers were the aggressor, taking three different leads in the period. IU scored first to take a 5-4 advantage with 4:24 remaining. Senior Kandace Waldthaler notched her third goal of the match off the assist from junior Emily Schmitt. Off a Michigan turnover, the Hoosiers got out on the break with Schmitt leading the charge. Indiana had the numbers and Schmitt find a wide-open Waldthaler, who scored into the right side of the net.
Michigan responded like it had all game, scoring on its next possession. Sheetal Narsai skipped a shot into the left corner of the Hoosier goal to knot things up at five with 3:46 remaining. It was her second goal of the match for the Wolverines.
Freshman Carolyn Conway made her first career goal count, scoring with 2:39 remaining as the Hoosiers regained a one-goal advantage. Junior Janis Pardy found Conway in the two-meter from the top of the perimeter. Conway backhanded the ball past Michigan goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong for a 6-5 IU lead.
Michigan again skipped its way back to even. Erin Brown skipped a perimeter shot into the left side with the shot lock running down. It was the fourth time, the Wolverines pulled back even after the Hoosiers had taken a one-goal lead.
After losing 10 of its last 15 matches to Michigan by two goals or less, including six overtime affairs, the Hoosiers would not be denied. Schmitt scored from the left side of the perimeter for what proved to be the game-winner. Junior Clare Meadows found Schmitt on the left side of the perimeter with a pass. After a pump fake, Schmitt unleashed a shot into the upper left corner for her first tally of the season.
The Hoosiers would make Schmitt's goal stand up, despite at one point over the final 1:30 being down two players due to back-to-back ejections. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner came up with some important stops in the final period of play. Goldner finished with 11 saves, including two six-on-five saves in the final period.
Conway registered the first steal of her career and at the most opportune time. With Michigan on the attack, the Newport Beach, Calif., native knocked away and corralled an errant U of M pass. Indiana was then able to waste the final 26 seconds of the match, with the shot clock off.
Waldthaler started the game on fire for the Hoosiers. The Fairfield, Calif., native scored a pair of goals in the first 1:30 of the match to stake IU to a 2-0 lead. Just 40 seconds into the match, Meadows found Waldthaler open on the right post. With 4:48 remaining in the opening period, Pardy found Waldthaler, giving IU its largest lead of the match.
Michigan responded scoring the game's next three goals to take its only lead of the night as 3-2. Senior Krista Peterson tied the game on a six-on-five goal with 2:26 remaining in the first half.
