Indiana Drops Opener to UCLA

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 11 Indiana water polo team dropped its season opener to No. 1 and 2003 NCAA Champion UCLA, 14-2, in the Michigan Invitational at Canham Natatorium. The Bruins scored four first period goals and forced 23 Indiana turnovers, leading to eight counter attack goals.
"We didn't have a chance to ease into this season facing the No. 1 team in the country," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "I didn't think we played our best this morning, but give UCLA credit they really put a lot of pressure on the ball. They exposed some weaknesses of ours, and that gives us something to go back and work on. We just can't turn the ball over in the middle of the pool. It led to them getting eight counter attack goals, and that was a big difference in the game."
The Bruins lineup features four players from the U.S. National team that took the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Natalie Golda, Thalia Munro, Kelly Rulon and Amber Stachowski all redshirted the 2004 season to train for the Olympic Games. In addition, the Bruins also return first team All-American Kristina Kunkle and a pair third team All-Americans in Lauren Heineck and Emily Feher.
The Hoosiers struggled offensively in the opening match of the season. IU attempted only 12 shots compared to its 23 turnovers. Indiana also gave up a pair of four-meter penalty goals and two tallies with UCLA on the six-on-five advantage.
Senior Krista Peterson notched the Hoosiers first goal of the season to cut the UCLA lead to 3-1 in the opening period of play. With 3:08 on the clock, junior Emily Schmitt found Peterson on a cross-pool pass, and the Portland, Ore., native scored into the corner of the net.
Senior Kandace Waldthaler scored the Hoosiers' only other goal of the match in the fourth period. Peterson found her fellow classmate on the weak side, and Waldthaler scored into the corner with Indiana on the six-on-five advantage.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner turned in a solid performance in net for the Hoosiers. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native made 11 saves on the afternoon, including a four-meter penalty shot save in the opening period of play. Goldner also led the Hoosiers with two steals. Junior Clare Meadows also had two steals on the defensive end for IU.
Golda and Kunkel each added hat tricks in the victory for UCLA. Munro and Brittany Rowe each scored twice for the Bruins as well.
The Hoosiers return to the pool later today with another top 10 match up against No. 9 Michigan. The match carries a 5:00 p.m. start time at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
