Upended by Tough Duke Squad

Duke won the first doubles match at the No. 3 position, as the team of freshman Clelia Deltour and sophomore Parker Goyer bested senior Dominika Walterova and sophomore Kara Zeder by the margin of 8-3. Duke clinched the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 slot. Sophomores Kristen Cargill and Jenn Zika downed junior Sarah Batty and sophomore Laura McGaffigan by the score of 8-4.
In the final doubles contest, the Blue Devils duo of seniors Katie Blaszak and Saras Arasu jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the match, but Indiana's tandem of senior Dora Vastag and freshman Brianna Williams came back to even the score at 7-7. Duke ended up pulling out a tiebreaking victory of 7-4 to win the final duos match.
"I was pretty pleased with the way that we played today," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "I thought that we were very competitive in two-of-three doubles matches and four-of-six singles matches. We competed well in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches, with the score 5-4 at one-time, in both contests."
In the singles ledger, the Blue Devils won four of the six contests, including a win from Deltour over Williams, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. Duke took a 3-0 lead in the match when Cargill bested sophomore Cecile Perton at No. 6, 6-3, 6-1.
At the No. 1 position, Vastag, the 91st-ranked player in the country, lost to Blaszak, the 115th-ranked player in the nation, 6-2, 6-3. "I though Dora's match was much closer than the score indicated," Loring said. "She played her opponent tough."
Duke clinched the match when Arasu, No. 96 in the nation, won 7-6, 6-1 at the fifth slot over Walterova.
The Hoosiers won a pair of singles matches on the day, as Batty upended sophomore Tory Zawacki at No. 2. Zawacki won the first set 6-4, but the Chesterfield, England, product rebounded to win the second set, 6-1. The two played a match tiebreaker, which Batty captured, 10-5, for IU's first point of the day.
IU ended the match on a high-note as McGaffigan upset Zika, the 108th-ranked player in the country, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7), at the third slot.
Batty and McGaffigan both improve to 3-0 in singles play this spring.
The Hoosiers will return to the courts on Sunday, Jan. 30, for a match at No. 15 North Carolina. The contest is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
