Mauro Named Dir. of FB Ops.

Mauro moves into his new position after 22 years as a Senior Associate Athletics Director at Indiana, where he supervised the athletic department's support services and served as the sport administrator for several Olympic sport programs. As Director of Football Operations, Mauro is responsible for most day-to-day aspects of the program, including travel and budget management. He will be involved in every non-coaching aspect of the program.
According to Greenspan, Mauro is an ideal fit for his new role.
"Few people can match the passion that Harold has for this university and its athletic programs, especially football," Greenspan said. "Any time you can have a former player serve such a valuable role within your program, it is a positive. Harold has been instrumental in managing the new coaching staff's transition to Bloomington, and we know that he will do an outstanding job in his new role."
Hoeppner echoed Greenspan's sentiments.
"I have known Harold for several years, and I have always had tremendous respect for him as a coach and administrator," Hoeppner said. "Whenever you make an adjustment into a new job, it always helps to have a familiar face ease the transition. Harold really helped my staff and me hit the ground running, and it is great to know that he will fill such an important position for us."
Mauro could not be more excited about his new role.
"I really appreciate this opportunity," Mauro said. "I have spent more than 30 years here as a student-athlete, coach and administrator, so this university, its athletic teams and specifically, this football program, hold a spot near and dear to my heart. Coach Hoeppner is a great fit to lead this program, and I enjoy working with him."
A native of Verona, Pa., Mauro was a linebacker on the 1964 and `65 Indiana football teams before missing the 1966 campaign due to injury. Prior to the 1966 season, Mauro had been moved from linebacker to center, and he was the starting center on Indiana's 1967 Rose Bowl team.
After earning his bachelor's degree in physical education in 1968, Mauro served as an Indiana graduate assistant in 1968 before moving on to University High School in Bloomington as an assistant coach in 1969 and 1970. He returned to IU as an assistant freshman coach in 1971 before moving up to the varsity staff in 1972. He followed his college coach, John Pont, to Northwestern, for four years before returning to IU in 1977 as the guards and centers coach. After four years in that capacity, he served as the offensive coordinator in 1982.
In addition to the 1967 Rose Bowl team, Mauro was an assistant coach on Indiana's 1979 Holiday Bowl champions and was an administrator for the 1986 All-American Bowl, 1988 Peach Bowl, 1988 Liberty Bowl, 1990 Peach Bowl, 1991 Copper Bowl and 1993 Independence Bowl teams.
Mauro earned his master's degree from Indiana in health and safety in 1969 and was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Allegheny-Kiski Valley Sports Hall of Fame in May, 1993.
Mauro and his wife, Joy, have two daughters - Heather and Megan.
