BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's success continued in day two of the Hoosier Classic with two Hoosiers winning their brackets and two doubles pairs advancing to the semifinals. Senior Sarah Batty defeated Notre Dame's Brook Buck, 6-2, 6-2 in the finals of the Flight A bracket. Buck is ranked No. 54 in the ITA preseason poll. In the Flight B draw, junior Laura McGaffigan walked away a winner over Katie Potts from Notre Dame. The hard-fought match ended McGaffigan's way by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(6). In doubles, both Batty and McGaffigan and Cecile Perton and Alba Berdala advanced to the semifinals that will be played tomorrow at the Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts at 10 a.m.
Also winning in singles play were Berdala over No. 95 Tamar Kavaratskhelia of Kansas State, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(12) for third place in the Flight B bracket. Freshmen Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller, junior Perton and senior Dora Vastag also notched singles win in day two of the Classic.
The day opened with two rounds of doubles competition. Batty and McGaffigan, who will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif., next week for the ITA All-American Championship after claiming the ITA National Summer Doubles Championship in August, defeated Kansas State's Jessica Simosa and Olga Kilmova, 8-4 before topping Elizaveta Avdeeva and Ksenia Bukina of Kansas, 8-3. The pair will face Notre Dame's Lauren Connelly and Kristina Stastney tomorrow.
Berdla and Perton also had a two-win doubles day with an 8-4 win over Lauren Hommell and Edina Horvath of Kansas before beating LSU's Tiffany Tucker and Lauren Seaman, 8-3. Berdala and Perton will face a pair from Notre Dame as well in Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft in the semis that will be played tomorrow.
