Tudela Named IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Oct. 9, junior men's soccer player Josh Tudela garnered the distinction.
Tudela guided the Hoosiers to a pair of 2-0 victories during the week. The Evansville, Ind., native scored three of the four Hoosier goals in road wins over Louisville and Michigan. He was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his Hoosier career.
On Oct. 5 at Louisville, Tudela scored both Hoosier goals. He headed in a corner kick in the 19th minute from freshman Lee Nguyen before bending a free kick around the wall to ice the match in the 82nd minute. Against Michigan with the Hoosiers leading, 1-0, he went far post from 18 yards off an assist from senior midfielder Jordan Chirico, clinching a 2-0 win.
"Josh has been playing exceptionally well for us," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "He has always been key in our play offensively, but this year, he is a scoring machine. He has a great engine and works extremely hard. He is a role model for young players."
With his two goals, Tudela moved into a tie with junior forward Jacob Peterson for the team lead with five tallies on the season. In fact, Tudela's five goals this season are the first regular season markers of his career. Coming into his junior campaign, Tudela had scored two career goals for IU both in the NCAA Tournament. He also ranks second on the team in points with 12.
College Soccer News also recognized Tudela, naming him to its National Team of the Week. He is the fourth Hoosier this season, joining senior Brian Plotkin, Peterson and Nguyen, to earn the honor.
Tudela earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving nominees. The list of nominees included sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe (men's soccer), sophomore quarterback Blake Powers (football), junior safety Will Meyers (football), senior midfielder Kayla Bashore (field hockey), junior back Morgan Miller (field hockey), senior back Courtney O'Bryan (women's soccer) and freshman Drew Allenspach (men's golf)
Hoosier Honor Roll Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe (men's soccer) - registered fifth and sixth shutouts of the season against Louisville and Michigan.
Junior safety Will Meyers (football) - 11 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, one interception in the Hoosiers' win over Illinois.
Sophomore quarterback Blake Powers (football) - set single-season touchdown passes record with 18 on the year, including four in a victory over Illinois.
Senior midfielder Kayla Bashore (field hockey) - scored two goals in victory over Northwestern.
Junior back Morgan Miller (field hockey) - recorded first defensive save of the season in the win over Northwestern.
Senior defender Courtney O'Bryan (women's soccer) - scored a goal against Ohio State
Freshman Drew Allenspach (men's golf) - finished tied for 18th at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge.
