BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As the Indiana women's golf squad gears up for its fall season finale at Penn State, senior Katie Carlson kept a diary while competing at the Shootout At The Legends. It was the final round of that tournament where the Livonia, Mich., native collected the school's first ever known hole-in-one during tournamnet play.
Sunday, Oct. 9
We left for The Legends around 8:30 to play our practice round. It was really exciting to finally be traveling with the girls after a few weeks off. The car ride up there was entertaining as usual. We all laughed and joked while listening to music.
Once we arrived at The Legends we went through our normal warm-up routine of hitting balls and putting. We played our practice round at 11. Practice round days are always my favorite. This is one of the few times we get to play together when score doesn't matter. The round is full of stories and laughter.
When we finished the round we did a little team circle putting and then headed to the hotel. We left for dinner with some of the parents around 6. We ate at Buca De Beppo and ordered way to much food as usual. Throughout the course of our meal, we recalled the words to the meatball song. This kept us occupied all the way back to the hotel as we created our own words to the song.
Once we arrived at the hotel we had our team meeting. We formulated our game plan for the next day and got excited to play the next morning.
Monday, Oct. 10
We woke up early this morning. We ate breakfast together as a team at the hotel and then headed to the golf course at 6:15 am. We went through our normal warm-up routine for about an hour. We headed out to our holes at 7:45 to start our 36-hole day. We played well as a team in the first round. We cheered each other on throughout the day. We had a lot of support from our parents, coaches and teammates who weren't competing. We finished out the second round strong. Everyone hung in there through a tough round and I couldn't be more proud of my team.
We went to dinner as a team and were joined by a few parents and friends. We shared all the silly stories that occurred during the round. Dinner was fun because we did our two favorite things, eat and laugh.
Once dinner was over, we headed back to the hotel and had a quick team meeting. We went over our favorite shots of the day and set our goals for the last round. We all headed to bed pretty early because we were exhausted after a long day.
Tuesday, Oct. 11
We didn't' have to wake up as early because our tee times were delayed by a half an hour. We still ate breakfast together as a team before packing the car and heading to the golf course at 6:45. Once again we went through our warm-up and headed out to play our final 18 holes around 8:15.
This was a very exciting round for me. As I reached the second hole of the day, I hit a hole-in-one! It was very exciting because it was my first ever, but also because my family and coaches were there to see it. As the rest of the round continued we didn't play as well as we hoped. However, I was still impressed with my team's ability to grind out the round. We attended the awards ceremony after the tournament. I received an embroidered hat for my hole-in-one and Shannon got a trophy for her 5th place finish! When everything was over we said goodbye to our families and packed the car and headed back to Bloomington ready to do it all over again.
